Understanding the Spirit Language of Icons with Mary Jane Miller
Byzantine Art is almost entirely concerned with religious expression through a visual language. The Byzantine church developed a carefully controlled theology and meaning through forms, symbols, colors, and shapes. By the 17th century, Russia perfected a rigid tradition with a sophisticated style and a spiritual expression that was expected and respected by the communities of painters in the iconography schools and workshops.
Mary Jane Miller, a respected iconographer, author, and teacher, will give a presentation of language. These intriguing images speak for themselves! reminding us that someone painted them and someone preserved them. We will look at orbs, heavens, wings, halos, accidents, and surprises. Join us in the discussion and commentary.Wednesday, June 12, 2024
